For many people, there is a level of satisfaction that accompanies spending time talking about our problems and the solutions. "I'm not going to take this anymore from her" , or “He has seen the last of me, you can believe that” or “I'm going to work hard over the next few months, make enough money and pay off all my debts". These resolves are often accompanied by explanations about how we got where we are and ramblings that don't always make sense to the listener. If we are honest, the ramblings don't make sense to us either; just saying something without much to say. This “blowing off steam” usually is the extent of any action taken to resolve the issue. I once heard or read somewhere this saying, “Spend less time talking about what you are going to do and more time taking action to resolve issues of life. Blowing off steam is short term gratification. Just talking iwill never solve problems.
What are some consequences that result from just verbally "blowing off steam"?
Can there be benefits?
Any other thoughts......?
the only benefit when blowing off steam is the short lived emotional relief that accompanies talking about a situation that is often just painful and i am still stuck there....even after the talking and crying is over, soon thereafter i begin to hurt again. i am dwelling in the past, conjuring up images and living in that past tonow. feel good for a moment, then back in the pain. no progress.
